For most online sellers, Photoroom is the best AI tool for editing product photos in 2026. It handles the boring 90% of the job (cutouts, white backgrounds, shadows, resizing, batch exports) better than anything else at its price, and it can also generate lifestyle scenes when you need them. Pro starts at $7.50 a month billed yearly.
The rest of the field is about specific jobs. Claid.ai is the one to reach for when your source photos are bad: low-res supplier images, dull colors, mixed sizes. Pebblely is the quickest way to get pretty lifestyle scenes for Instagram. Photoshop is still the tool for a hero image you want perfect. Canva turns product shots into ads and banners. And if you sell on Shopify or advertise on Amazon, the free AI tools built into those platforms are worth a look before you pay for anything.
Quick picks:
- Best overall: Photoroom
- Best for fixing and upscaling poor photos: Claid.ai
- Best for fast lifestyle scenes: Pebblely
- Best for pixel-level control: Adobe Photoshop
- Best for marketing graphics: Canva
- Best free option for Shopify stores: Shopify Magic
- Best free option for Amazon ads: Amazon Ads image generator
One rule sits above all of these picks: an AI edit can make a photo look better, but it can't show a different product. We cover where the line is (and what Amazon, Etsy and the FTC say) further down.
Quick verdict
Our pick
Photoroom
4.6Best for: Most small and mid-size sellers who need clean, consistent catalog shots fast ยท Free plan; Pro $7.50/mo billed yearly ($12.99 monthly); Max $20.99/mo yearly
Photoroom is our pick for most sellers. It covers background removal, preset AI shadows, AI backgrounds, resizing and batch editing in one app, with export limits that fit real catalogs (1,000 a month on Pro, 3,000 on Max). The Max plan adds a Shopify integration, and there's a pay-per-image API if you outgrow the app.
Pick Claid.ai instead if your main problem is image quality rather than backgrounds, or you want to automate edits across thousands of SKUs.
What marketplaces actually require
Before you pick a tool, know what the output has to look like. These are the official rules as of September 2026.
| Marketplace | Key requirements |
|---|---|
| Amazon (main image) | Pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255); product shown as 85% of the image; 1,000+ px on the longest side enables zoom (500 px minimum, 10,000 px maximum); JPEG preferred |
| Shopify | Square images of 2048 x 2048 px usually display best; up to 5000 x 5000 px (25 megapixels) and under 20 MB |
| Etsy | At least 2000 px wide and tall recommended; first photo at least 635 px and horizontal or square; transparent PNGs and animated GIFs not supported |
Sources: Amazon's product image requirements, Shopify's product media help and Etsy's listing photo help.
Amazon's main-image rule is the one that trips people up. That first image has to be a clean studio-style shot on pure white, one unit, no props that don't ship with the product. Lifestyle scenes belong in the secondary image slots, A+ content and ads. So for Amazon sellers, the most valuable AI feature is reliable cutouts on true white, not fancy scene generation.

Photoroom
Photoroom Our pick
4.6- Pricing
- Free plan; Pro $7.50/mo billed yearly ($12.99 monthly); Max $20.99/mo yearly
- Best for
- Most small and mid-size sellers who need clean, consistent catalog shots fast
Why it wins: it's built around the catalog workflow. Upload a batch, remove backgrounds, drop products onto white or a brand color, add a shadow, resize for each channel, export. That's what most sellers do every week.
Photoroom lists a set of "core tools" as unlimited on all paid plans: Background Remover, Retouch, AI Product Fixer, preset AI Shadows, AI Fill, AI Expand and Resize, and Image Enhancer. On top of those, paid plans get monthly AI credits for generation-heavy features like AI Backgrounds and AI Fashion Models, according to the pricing page.
The plans, as of September 2026:
- Pro: $7.50/month billed yearly or $12.99 monthly. 1,000 exports a month.
- Max: $20.99/month billed yearly or $34.99 monthly. 3,000 exports a month, plus the video generator and Shopify integration.
- Ultra: from $82.50/month billed yearly or $99 monthly. 10,000 exports a month and 4K output, with bigger tiers up to 100,000 exports.
Export numbers come from Photoroom's export limit help article, which also lists the free plan at 100 exports a month. Photoroom's plan overview says the free plan can't be used for commercial purposes, so treat it as a trial if you're selling.
Two catches. Adjustable AI shadows (as opposed to presets) are Enterprise-only, and 4K needs Ultra. For typical marketplace images neither matters much, since Amazon zoom kicks in at 1,000 px and Shopify recommends 2048 px.
The Photoroom API is a real plus for stores with developers: $0.02 per image for background removal, $0.10 per image for the Image Editing API (AI backgrounds, shadows, expand, product staging), and 1,000 free watermarked sandbox calls a month for testing.
If all you need is the occasional cutout, you don't need any paid tool. Our guide to removing image backgrounds with AI for free covers the free options.
Claid.ai
Claid.ai
4.3- Pricing
- Free trial with 50 credits; Essentials $9/mo; Pro $35/mo
- Best for
- Upscaling and fixing messy supplier photos in bulk, and API automation
Best for rescue jobs. If you import supplier photos that are small, dark or inconsistent, Claid's upscaling and color correction do more for you than a pretty AI background.
Claid positions itself as a product photo suite: background removal, upscaling, color correction, AI Photoshoot (lifestyle scenes), AI fashion models and image-to-video, per its homepage. The pitch that matters for larger catalogs is automation. Claid says it can check and edit images to platform requirements and apply a brand style across thousands of images.
Pricing uses credits you can spend on any operation. The pricing page lists:
- Free trial: 50 credits, plus 50 API credits
- Essentials: $9/month, 500 credits, output up to 2K
- Pro: $35/month, 2,000 credits, 2K and 4K generation
- Business: custom, with advanced API workflows
Different operations cost different amounts of credits. On Pro, for example, Claid's table works out to about 1,000 upscales or 500 AI Photoshoots a month. Yearly billing is discounted.
Where Claid falls short is ease of use for a one-person shop. Photoroom feels like a phone app. Claid feels more like a production tool, which is great if you have 5,000 SKUs and a developer, and a bit much if you have 40 candles.
Pebblely
Pebblely
4.0- Pricing
- Lite $9/mo (30 images); Basic $19/mo; Pro $39/mo
- Best for
- Quick lifestyle scenes for social posts and secondary listing images
Best for scene generation on a budget. Upload a product, pick a theme, get a batch of lifestyle shots. It's narrow, and that's the point.
Pebblely does one thing: put your product into generated scenes. It offers 40+ background themes and custom prompts on every plan, bulk generation on Basic and Pro, and resizing into formats for platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, Etsy and Amazon, per its pricing page and homepage.
- Lite: $9/month for 30 images
- Basic: $19/month for 200 images, with bulk generate
- Pro: $39/month for 500 images, with bulk generate
Pebblely advertises an annual discount, but its pricing page and FAQ quote different yearly figures, so check at checkout. As of September 2026 its pricing page doesn't list a free plan, an API or output resolution. The FAQ says you own the images you generate.
For small brands posting on social several times a week, Pebblely is a cheap way to keep the feed fresh. Just don't expect it to replace your main listing image, which on Amazon has to be on white anyway.
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop
4.2- Pricing
- Photoshop $22.99/mo (25 credits); Photography plan $19.99/mo (1,000 credits)
- Best for
- Hero images and tricky retouching where you need full manual control
Best for the images that matter most. When a hero shot needs a stray reflection removed, a label straightened and a background extended without touching the product, Photoshop's mix of AI and manual tools is still unmatched.
Photoshop's AI features run on generative credits. Generative Fill lets you select an area and describe what to add or remove. Generative Expand widens a crop, which is handy when a product is framed too tight to hit Amazon's 85% guideline or Shopify's square format. Both work with a selection mask, so you can protect the product itself and only regenerate the background.
The cost is in the credits. The standalone Photoshop plan runs about $22.99/month in the US and comes with 25 monthly generative credits, while the Photography plan (Photoshop plus Lightroom) costs about $19.99/month and includes 1,000. Adobe's plans page confirms those credit allowances. Credit costs per generation vary by model, so heavy users should check the in-app cost preview. If you're buying Photoshop mainly for AI edits, the Photography plan is the better deal.
Photoshop is slow for bulk work, though. It has batch actions, but they aren't built around AI edits the way Photoroom or Claid are. Adobe's Firefly Services APIs target enterprise teams, not small shops.
Canva
Canva
4.1- Pricing
- Free; Pro $144/year; Business $250/year per person
- Best for
- Turning product shots into ads, banners and social graphics
Best for turning photos into marketing. Canva isn't a product photo editor first, but Background Remover, Magic Edit, Magic Expand, Magic Grab and the Background Generator cover a lot of ground once your photo is in a design.
Canva's strength is what happens after the photo is clean: a sale banner, a Pinterest pin, a Facebook ad, an email header, all resized from one design with Magic Resize. Canva Pro is $144 a year for one person, and Business is $250 a year per person.
It's weaker for catalog work. There's no batch pipeline for processing hundreds of product photos the way Photoroom has, and Background Remover requires a paid plan. We go deeper on which Magic features earn their keep in our Canva AI review.
Shopify Magic
Shopify Magic
3.8- Pricing
- Included with Shopify plans (media generation free for a limited time)
- Best for
- Shopify merchants who want quick background swaps without another app
Best free add-on for Shopify merchants. Background removal and prompt-based scene generation live right in the admin's file editor, so there's nothing to install.
Shopify's media generation lets you swap a background for a solid color or transparency, or type a short prompt like "kitchen setting with warm lighting" to generate a scene. As of September 2026, Shopify says it's available on all plans at no extra cost "for a limited time."
The limits are real, though. Generated media defaults to 1 megapixel, well below Shopify's own 2048 x 2048 recommendation. You work on one image and one scene at a time. Shopify also adds an invisible watermark to generated images (it doesn't restrict commercial use). Use it for quick fixes and seasonal banners, not your whole catalog. Amazon Ads image generator
Amazon Ads image generator
3.7- Pricing
- Free for Amazon advertisers
- Best for
- Lifestyle images for Sponsored Brands and display ads on Amazon
Best free option for Amazon advertisers. Pick a product, click Generate, and get lifestyle and brand-themed images built for ads.
Amazon's AI image generation creates lifestyle images from your product details at no extra cost, and you can refine them with text prompts. It launched for Sponsored Brands and is now part of Amazon's generative AI creative tools, available in 15 countries including the US, UK, Canada, Germany, India and Japan. Amazon says Sponsored Brands mobile ads using lifestyle imagery saw click-through rates "more than 40% higher" than ads with standard product images. That's Amazon's own number, and it's about lifestyle imagery in general, not a guarantee for your ads.
It's an ad tool, not a listing editor. It won't produce your white-background main image, and it only helps if you're advertising on Amazon.
Keep AI edits honest
This is the part many roundups skip. AI makes it easy to "improve" a product in ways that become misrepresentation: a glossier finish, a richer color, a bigger-looking bottle, props that suggest a bundle.
- Amazon requires images to "accurately represent the product," match the title, and show no accessories or props that aren't included, per its image requirements. If an image contains photorealistic AI-generated people, Amazon asks sellers to tag the file with the
contains-synthetic-performerkeyword in its XMP metadata so it can show a disclosure. - The FTC says advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive, and it judges an ad by what it conveys as a whole, pictures included (FTC advertising FAQs). A product photo that misstates color, size or finish is a claim, even without words.
- Your returns data will tell on you anyway. "Not as pictured" is a costly return reason.
Scale is the sneakiest issue. A scene generator doesn't know your candle is 8 oz, so it may put it next to a giant coffee cup. Shopify's own guidance suggests putting size in the prompt, and it helps with any tool. Include a size reference photo in your listing too.
Which one should you choose?
- You sell on Amazon and need compliant main images at volume: Photoroom for cutouts on pure white, plus the free Amazon Ads generator for ad creative.
- You import supplier or dropshipping photos: Claid.ai. Upscaling and color correction do more than new backgrounds.
- You run a small Shopify brand and post on social daily: Photoroom Pro, plus Pebblely if you want more scene variety. Try Shopify Magic first for one-off swaps.
- You have a handful of high-value products: Photoshop, on the Photography plan for the credits.
- Your bottleneck is ads and graphics, not photos: Canva.
Photos are half of a listing. The other half is copy, and our guide to AI tools for product descriptions covers that side. For AI image generators beyond product work, see our pillar on the best AI image and video generators.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use AI-generated backgrounds for my Amazon main image?
Only if the result is a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) with the product filling about 85% of the frame and nothing added that doesn't ship with it. In practice, AI scenes belong in secondary images, A+ content and ads, not the main image.
What size should product photos be for Amazon, Shopify and Etsy?
Amazon enables zoom at 1,000 px or more on the longest side. Shopify says square 2048 x 2048 px images usually display best. Etsy recommends at least 2000 px on each side. Exporting square images at 2000 to 2048 px covers all three.
Is Photoroom free for commercial use?
Photoroom has a free plan with 100 exports a month, but its help center says the free plan can't be used for commercial purposes. Sellers need a paid plan, starting at $7.50/month billed yearly as of September 2026.
Do I have to disclose AI-edited product photos?
There's no blanket rule, but images must not mislead. Amazon requires images to accurately represent the product and asks sellers to tag photorealistic AI-generated people with a metadata keyword. Under FTC rules, an image that misstates what the buyer gets can be deceptive advertising.
What's the cheapest way to edit product photos with AI?
If you're on Shopify or advertise on Amazon, start with the free built-in tools. For a dedicated editor, Photoroom Pro and Claid Essentials both start under $10 a month, and simple cutouts can be done free with the tools in our background removal guide.
