Zapier, Make and n8n automation platforms compared for AI workflows
Table of contents

If AI automation is the main job, n8n is the best of the three in 2026. It bills per workflow run instead of per step, so AI workflows with lots of steps stay cheap. Its AI Agent node and LangChain-based building blocks go deeper than anything Zapier or Make offer. And you can self-host it for free, which matters the moment you're piping customer data through a language model.

That doesn't make it the right pick for everyone. Zapier is still the easiest tool here and connects to the most apps (9,000+), so a non-technical small business owner will get a working AI automation live faster there. Make sits in the middle: a visual canvas that handles branching and loops well, at prices far below Zapier's for the same volume.

Below: how each one actually charges you (tasks, credits and executions are not the same thing), what the same AI workflow costs on each at 2,000 runs a month, and which one fits which kind of team.

Quick verdict

Our pick

n8n

4.6

Best for: Developers, technical teams and privacy-conscious businesses building AI agents · Free self-hosted Community Edition; Cloud Starter from €20/mo billed annually

n8n wins for AI automation. Per-execution pricing, a proper agent toolkit (memory, vector stores, tools, MCP in both directions) and free self-hosting make it the strongest platform for anything beyond simple "send this text to ChatGPT" steps.

Pick Zapier if you're non-technical, need an obscure app integration, or want the shortest path from idea to working automation.

Pick Make if you want visual, multi-branch workflows on a tight budget and don't want to manage a server.

How each tool charges: tasks vs credits vs executions

This is the single most important section, because the three companies count usage in completely different ways. Comparing "2,000 tasks" with "2,000 executions" is comparing apples with fruit baskets.

Zapier counts tasks. A task is each action step Zapier completes successfully. Per the pricing page, triggers don't count, and neither do built-in tools like Filter, Formatter, Paths and Delay. So a Zap with one trigger and three actions uses three tasks every time it runs. AI steps are different: since June 2026, AI by Zapier is priced by model tier. A Standard step costs 1 task, Advanced (now the default) costs 3, Premium costs 5, and each tool call the AI makes costs the same again. Bring your own AI account and it's 1 task per step.

Make counts credits. Make replaced "operations" with "credits" on August 27, 2025, converting balances 1:1. For normal modules nothing changed: each module action is one credit, per the pricing page. What changed is AI. Make's built-in AI features, including the Make AI Provider, now use a variable number of credits based on tokens, file size or run time. If you connect your own OpenAI or Anthropic account instead, you pay Make the normal credit per module and pay the AI provider for tokens separately.

n8n counts executions. In n8n's own words on its pricing page, an execution is one run of an entire workflow, no matter how many steps it has. A 3-step workflow and a 30-step AI agent workflow each cost one execution. Self-host the free Community Edition and there's no execution cap at all.

Two free-plan details matter for AI work. Zapier's Free plan limits you to two-step Zaps, and AI by Zapier isn't available on Free beyond previewing. Make's Free plan runs scheduled scenarios no more often than every 15 minutes (paid plans go down to 1 minute).

The worked cost example: one AI workflow at 2,000 runs a month

Here's an illustrative workflow a small business might actually build: a new lead arrives from a web form, an AI step classifies it and drafts a reply, the result is added to a Google Sheet, and a summary is posted to Slack. Four steps, running 2,000 times a month. Prices below are list prices as of September 2026.

Zapier

  • Trigger (form): 0 tasks
  • AI by Zapier step, Standard tier, no tools: 1 task
  • Google Sheets: 1 task. Slack: 1 task
  • Total: 3 tasks × 2,000 runs = 6,000 tasks/month

There's no tier between 5,000 and 10,000 tasks, so you'd buy Professional at 10,000 tasks: $129/month billed annually, or $193.50 month to month. Leave the AI step on the default Advanced tier and it's 5 tasks per run, or exactly 10,000 tasks, which puts you right at the ceiling with no headroom. The upside: the AI model cost is included in those tasks.

Make

  • Webhook trigger, OpenAI module (your own API key), Google Sheets, Slack: counted conservatively as 4 credits per run
  • Total: 4 × 2,000 = 8,000 credits/month

That fits in the 10,000-credit Core plan: $9/month, or $7.65/month billed annually, plus whatever OpenAI charges you for tokens. If you use Make's built-in AI Provider instead, the AI step's credit cost varies with token usage, so budget more headroom.

n8n

  • One run of the whole workflow = 1 execution
  • Total: 2,000 executions/month

That fits in Cloud Starter (2,500 executions): €20/month billed annually, or €24 month to month, plus your model provider's token costs. Self-hosted, the software costs nothing and you pay only for a server and the AI tokens.

A note on the "AI model cost included" check: it means you can run AI steps without your own API key. AI by Zapier bills in tasks, and Make's AI Provider bills in credits. n8n Cloud plans include AI credits, but those power its AI Workflow Builder assistant, not your workflows' model calls, so you bring your own model account.

AI features compared

Zapier: the broadest reach

Zapier's AI story comes in four parts. AI by Zapier is the step you drop into a Zap to summarize, classify or extract, with the model-tier pricing described above. Copilot builds and edits Zaps from plain English; Free users get a daily message limit and paid plans get unlimited use, per the pricing page. Zapier Agents are autonomous assistants you give company knowledge and let loose across its 9,000+ apps; they're billed separately in "activities," with 400 free a month. And Zapier MCP lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients call any of 66,000+ Zapier actions, at two tasks per tool call.

Zapier MCP is honestly the most useful piece if you already live in an AI chat app. It turns your assistant into something that can file a ticket or update your CRM without you building anything.

Make: agents on the canvas

Make AI Agents are built and debugged on the same visual canvas as regular scenarios, and Make says they're available on all plans. You can plug in OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Vertex AI (Gemini), Azure OpenAI, Mistral and others. Maia by Make builds scenarios and agents from a conversation, much like Zapier Copilot. Make also offers a Make MCP Server so outside AI tools can trigger your scenarios, and the pricing page lists an AI Content Extractor, AI Web Search (beta) and a Make AI Toolkit on every plan.

n8n: the deepest toolkit

n8n builds its AI features on LangChain's JavaScript framework, using "cluster nodes": a root node such as the AI Agent, a chain or a vector store, with sub-nodes attached for the chat model (Anthropic, OpenAI, Ollama and more), memory (Postgres, Redis, Simple Memory), tools, embeddings and document loaders. That's the kit for real retrieval-augmented generation and agents with memory, not just one-shot prompts. Ollama support also means you can run a local model and keep data entirely on your own hardware.

On MCP, n8n works both ways. The MCP Server Trigger node exposes your workflows as tools to outside AI clients, and the MCP Client Tool node lets your n8n agents use external MCP servers. The AI Workflow Builder drafts and fixes workflows from a description, at one credit per interaction.

Ease of use and building power

Zapier is the easiest. Zaps run top to bottom, the editor explains each field, and Copilot can build the first draft. Branching uses Paths, loops use Looping by Zapier, and paid plans get custom error handlers that run an alternative path when a step fails. Code by Zapier runs JavaScript or Python, but runtime is capped at 1 second on Free and 30 seconds on paid plans.

Make has a steeper learning curve and a bigger payoff. Scenarios are drawn as bubbles on a canvas, with routers for branches and iterators and aggregators for lists. It's easier to see a 20-step, five-branch workflow in Make than in Zapier. Error-handler routes and routers don't consume credits, per the pricing page. The Make Code app runs JavaScript or Python on paid plans, billed at two credits per second of runtime.

n8n assumes more technical comfort. It looks like Make, but you'll meet JSON, expressions and HTTP requests sooner. In return you get a Code node for JavaScript or Python, dedicated error workflows, and an HTTP Request node that reaches any API not covered by its roughly 2,270 listed integrations. For developers, n8n feels like a tool that won't box you in. For a bakery owner, it can feel like homework.

Self-hosting, data residency and compliance

This is where the three split hardest.

  • Zapier is cloud-only and hosted on AWS in the US, with no EU-only data residency option. It has SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 reports, supports GDPR with a data processing addendum, and is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, per its security and compliance page.
  • Make is cloud-only too, on AWS, and its pricing page lists EU and North America hosting. Its security page cites SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 audits, an ISO 27001-certified security program and GDPR adherence.
  • n8n Cloud is hosted in the EU, in Frankfurt according to the pricing page. n8n says it "aligns its security program to SOC 2" and publishes its SOC reports and GDPR details through its trust center. The bigger deal is self-hosting: the Community Edition is free under n8n's Sustainable Use License, which allows use "for your own internal business purposes" but not reselling it as a service. Self-host with a local model and your data never has to leave your servers.

If you're in healthcare, legal or finance, or you just promised clients their data stays in-house, n8n self-hosted is the only one of the three that can make that promise outright. Just remember that self-hosting means you own updates, backups and security.

Which one should you choose?

Pricing
Free (100 tasks/mo); Professional from $19.99/mo billed annually
Best for
Non-technical teams who want the most app integrations and the easiest setup

Choose Zapier if you're a non-technical small business owner who wants AI automations running this week, not next month. Think auto-drafting replies to new leads, summarizing form submissions, or sorting support emails (our guide to automating your email inbox with AI covers that use case). You'll pay the most per run, so keep workflows short and watch the AI step's model tier.

Pricing
Free (1,000 credits/mo); Core from $9/mo for 10,000 credits
Best for
Ops and marketing teams who want visual, complex scenarios at a low price

Choose Make if you're on an ops or marketing team running many multi-branch workflows: lead routing, content pipelines, syncing a CRM with ad platforms and spreadsheets. The visual canvas scales to complex logic, and at $9 a month for 10,000 credits it's hard to beat on price among fully hosted tools.

Pricing
Free self-hosted Community Edition; Cloud Starter from €20/mo billed annually
Best for
Developers, technical teams and privacy-conscious businesses building AI agents

Choose n8n if you're a developer, a technical founder, or anyone handling sensitive data. It's the best home for AI agents that need memory, tools and document retrieval, like a support bot that answers from your help docs (compare it with ready-made options in our roundup of AI chatbots for customer support). Start on Cloud Starter, then move to self-hosting once volume grows.

By user type

  • Non-technical small business: Zapier. The price premium buys you time and fewer headaches.
  • Ops or marketing team: Make, unless your workflows are mostly AI agents, in which case try n8n Cloud.
  • Developer or privacy-conscious business: n8n, and self-host if data control matters.

For the wider set of tools a small business might pair with these, see our pillar guide to the best AI tools for small businesses.

The bottom line

For AI automation specifically, n8n gives you the most capability per dollar and the most control over your data. Make is the value pick for visual, complex workflows without running a server. Zapier is the fastest, friendliest option and has the most integrations, but its per-step billing (and AI steps that can cost 3 to 5 tasks each) makes it the priciest as your AI workflows grow. Start with the one that matches your technical comfort, and re-run the cost math above with your own step counts before you commit to an annual plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is n8n really free?

The self-hosted Community Edition is free to use for your own internal business purposes, with no execution limits. You pay for the server and any AI API usage. n8n Cloud has no free plan, only a trial, with paid plans from €20 a month billed annually.

Did Make switch from operations to credits?

Yes. On August 27, 2025, Make replaced operations with credits at a 1:1 ratio. Standard modules still use one credit per action. Built-in AI features such as the Make AI Provider now use a variable number of credits based on tokens, file size or run time.

How many Zapier tasks does an AI step use?

It depends on the model tier. As of June 2026, an AI by Zapier step costs 1 task on Standard, 3 on Advanced (the default) and 5 on Premium, and each tool call costs the same again. Connecting your own AI account costs 1 task per step.

Which is cheapest for AI automation?

At 2,000 runs a month for a four-step AI workflow, Make's Core plan ($9 a month, month to month) is the cheapest hosted option, followed by n8n Cloud Starter (€24 a month, month to month), though both add AI token costs. Zapier comes to $129 a month billed annually. Self-hosted n8n is cheapest of all if you already have a server.

Can I use Zapier, Make or n8n with Claude or ChatGPT via MCP?

Yes. Zapier MCP lets MCP clients like Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor call Zapier actions at two tasks per tool call. Make offers a Make MCP Server. n8n has an MCP Server Trigger node to expose workflows and an MCP Client Tool node so its agents can use other MCP servers.
